Mammoplasty surgery

What is mammoplasty surgery?

In many cases, large breasts in women are synonymous with attractiveness and sensuality. Still, in most cases, overly large breasts may cause embarrassment and even certain pathologies such as back pain and changes in posture. All this occurs after puberty, when the skin is firmer and the mammary glands are rigid, but, in adulthood, these glands decrease in size and the volume of fat in the breasts increases. In addition, after pregnancy, the breastfeeding process makes these breasts to grow even more, overextending the skin and causing the breasts to sag.

At this time, the most commonly indicated plastic surgery is the Reduction Mammoplasty, which aims to remove excess fat and skin from the breasts by reducing them to an ideal size, making them firmer and giving them a youthful look again.

Who is a good candidate for a reduction mammoplasty surgery?

Reduction Mammoplasty surgery is indicated for women with overly large breasts, excess fat and flabbiness, and those with associated pathologies such as pain in the neck, back and shoulders, and also bruises due to wearing a bra.

It improves self-esteem, making it possible for women to do higher-impact physical activities, to choose comfortable clothes and, above all, to ensure the safety of their bodies. This is the mission of the surgeon specialized in breast reduction.

How is breast reduction cosmetic surgery performed?

Breast Reduction surgery is performed through an incision around the nipples that goes down to the underside of the breasts, leaving a scar shaped like an anchor or an inverted “T”. The stitches are intradermal, which means that the stitching is made inside the tissue and are not apparent on the skin, thus giving an appearance that is closer to normal. From there, each patient will decide the how they want their breasts to look. For those patients who want to continue with larger breasts, breast implants are placed, but excess skin is removed before that. In cases where the patient comes from a situation of obesity and goes through a Bariatric surgery, or for those who lost a lot of weight, such as the loss of breast tissue, and had lot of Lipo replaced, the insertion of a prosthesis is indicated.

In cases where a breast prosthesis is not needed, the incision procedure is the same. The removal of fat and excess skin is carried out and the breasts are lifted to complete the procedure.

Preserving the mammary glands and the sensitivity of the patient’s breasts is one of the plastic surgeon’s main goals.

Discover the step-by-step of the breast reduction surgery:

  1. Anamnesis:

An appointment is scheduled for assessment and to propose the ideal treatment.

  1. Clinical tests:

The doctor will ask for blood tests and an electrocardiogram, which are required before the surgery.

  1. Hospitalization and surgery:

Usually, the surgery lasts from two and a half to five hours. The patient tends to stay in the hospital and for 12 hours and rest for around 48 hours after the procedure. Anesthesia is epidural with sedation.

Post-surgery guidelines:

– Do not lie on your side or face down;

– Wear a suitable modeling bra;

– Shower without removing the adhesive tapes;

– Adhesive tapes can be kept on for 60 days;

– If they get dirty or show signs of secretion, change them;

– Bandages will be removed in 1 week;

– The stitches will be removed in 2 weeks.

Comments: Waxing the armpits should only be done after three weeks. The difference in volume between the breasts in the first months is frequent due to the swelling that results from the procedure itself.

It is recommended to avoid:

– Driving in the first three weeks;

– Smoking during the first two weeks;

– Immersion bathing for two weeks;

– Excessive physical activity, lifting weights, raising or spreading your arms exaggeratedly for at least four weeks;

– Sleeping on your stomach for three weeks;

– Exposing yourself to the sun or excessive heat for four weeks;

– Exercising or playing sports, especially those that require arm extension such as golfing, swimming, volleyball and others for 60 days.
