What is Blepharoplasty
Also known as eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery that removes excess skin from the eyelids, in addition to positioning them correctly so as to remove wrinkles, which result in a tired and aged appearance. In addition, blepharoplasty also removes excess fat from the lower eyelids.
Medical Travel Brazil has partnered with some of the best surgeons who, in addition to being experts and researchers in the area, are nationally and internationally renowned for the quality and exclusivity of the care provided and precision in surgical results. Here we explain the real benefits of the procedure and how we can improve your quality of life with a highly safe and warmly supported medical trip by our team of Concierges, Doctors and Nurses.
Who is a good candidate for blepharoplasty?
The procedure is indicated for people with advanced sagging skin or muscle in the eyelid area. With this, even young patients may undergo the procedure if they suffer from intense and early flaccidity. Hereditary factors may also result in an early indication for surgical treatment. However, the fat pouch starts to bulge after age 30, and excess skin after 40 years.
What are the expected results?
Generally, after surgery, the look becomes healthier, softer and younger, without signs of tiredness, the weight of the bags around the eyes or the impression of aging. With results that go beyond aesthetics, the benefits of this procedure are also reflected on the patient’s self-esteem.
How is the blepharoplasty aesthetic surgery accomplished?
Blepharoplasty lasts between 40 and 60 minutes and is performed, in most cases, under local anesthesia for sedation. However, some people prefer the procedure to be performed under general anesthesia.
To perform the surgery, the doctor specialized in blepharoplasty defines the area where the surgery will be performed, which can be on either the upper or lower eyelid, or both. Incisions are made in the chosen areas and excess skin, fat and muscle are removed before the skin is sutured. The doctor then applies steri-strips over the suture, which are stitches that are glued to the skin and do not cause pain.
The resulting scar is simple and thin, being easily hidden in the skin folds or under the lashes, becoming nearly invisible. After the procedure, the patient stays in the hospital for a few hours until the anesthesia wears off and then is released with some recommendations that must be followed.
Discover the step-by-step of blepharoplasty surgery:
- Anesthesia: The procedure, which lasts between 40 and 60 minutes, is performed, in most cases, under local anesthesia, without the need for hospitalization. However, when it is necessary to remove bags of fat or when the patient prefers to be asleep, the procedure may be performed under sedation in a hospital.
- Incision: The area in which the procedure will be performed is delimited, which can be the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid or both. Then, local anesthesia is applied with a fine needle and the excess skin is removed, as well as the fat pouches. Finally, fine stitches are applied and steri-strips (small adhesive tapes) are placed to cover the stitches and aid healing.
- Discharge: Patient is discharged soon after the procedure, if performed under local anesthesia. In the case of sedation, the patients wait in the hospital for a few hours, until they have adequate level of consciousness to be discharged. The patient must use cold compresses and lie on a high headboard in the first days.
- Post-surgery: After five days, the stitches are removed and the patient may apply makeup to cover the bruises and return to social life. It is advisable to have lymphatic drainage performed from the first days to speed up recovery and reduce edema (swelling).
